MSNBC.com reported this week that undersea archaeologists have found the ruins of an ancient city on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, and researchers claim that it is the fabled and lost city of Atlantis. It is believed that the satellite photos show apyramid and other city-like structures, and the researchers believe that what they’ve found even predates the Egyptian pyramids.

The archaeologists have so far refused to divulge their identities or the location in the Caribbean. They say they are raising money for an expedition to confirm their findings.

Could the Atlanteans have lived in Egypt?

As part of a special about Atlantis, the National Geographic Channel joined author William Henry in Egypt, on the theory that, if there is anything in the Atlantis story, it must connect to lost information that is reflected in early Egyptian culture.

They also discuss the sudden end of exploratory activity on the Giza plateau in 1997, and William’s belief that something of great importance was found there and has been hidden by officials because it flies in the face of modern religious and archaeological beliefs.

With a decade of research behind him, New Zealander Ian Fox is confident that he has found the location where the legendary empire of Atlantis once stood. Fox believes that the lost city was situated between the east coast of Greenland and the west coast of Baffin Island; a region where he considers the geography to be very similar to that of Atlantis as described by Plato.

Atlantis, the Lost Continent is a 1961 science fiction film, directed by George Pal and starring Anthony Hall aka: Sal Ponti, about the destruction of Atlantis during the time of Ancient Greece.

A Greek fisherman named Demetrios (Sal Ponti, under the screen name of Anthony Hall) and his father rescue Princess Antillia (Joyce Taylor) from a shipwreck without knowing that in fact she is from the technologically advanced civilization of Atlantis. Upon returning her to her civilization, Demetrios is placed into slavery. It turns out that the King Cronus (Edgar Stehli) is being manipulated by an ambitious usurper, Zaren (John Dall), using an evil sorcerer (Frank DeKova) who wishes to use the resources of Atlantis to take over the world. The slaves of Atlantis have been mining crystals which absorb the sun’s rays and can then be used to fire heat rays. Through the help of a kind, spiritual high priest named Azar (Edward Platt), Demetrios is able to rescue the princess from the wicked spells of the sorcerer and his malicious pretender to the throne, and escape from the spectacular destruction of Atlantis in the climactic finale.

The classical Greek city of Helike was destroyed by a massive earthquake and tidal wave on a single night in 373 BC. The entire city and all its inhabitants were lost beneath the sea.

What has bewitched archaeologists about Helike is that it was engulfed just when ancient Greece was reaching its height; when the philosophy and art that inspired the western world for thousands of years were invented.

The destruction of Helike was one of the most appalling tragedies of the classical world and most probably the reality behind the myth of Atlantis. But now, unlike Atlantis, a team of archaeologists may have found Helike – a lost city from the heyday of Greek civilisation. If it is as well preserved as everyone hopes, Helike could be a time capsule from this crucial time in human development.

The documentary follows archaeologist Dora Katsonopoulou and physicist Steven Soter on their investigations into the possible site of the lost city.

This video originates from a longer documenatry series titled: Seven Wonders of Ancient Greece.

The series takes the viewer on a journey to a land of breathtaking beauty and ancient intellect, where science, art and inspiration from the gods combined to produce some of the world’s greatest marvels of architecture and design.

From prehistoric palaces to bold symbols of victory, explore the seven ancient wonders that stir spectators to this day: the Theatre of Epidaurus, the statue of Zeus at Olympia, Apollo’s Temple at Delphi, the Colossus of Rhodes, the settlement at Santorini, the Palace of Knossos and surely the greatest masterpiece of them all the Parthenon. Learn how such impressive displays of engineering were managed in a time when technology was still in its infancy.

Engineers and architectural experts detail the unique structural aspects that make each monument so “wonder-ful,” while historians describe each wonder’s powerful role in ancient Greek life.

Lost City of Atlantis is the second in the series. the full series is as follows:

A Japanese researcher claims there are ruins of an ancient civilization under the Pacific Ocean.

Professor Masaaki Kimura of Ryukyu University claims that underwater rock formations are the remnants of an ancient Asian civilization that disappeared under the sea off the coast of the southwestern tip of Japan.

He also believes the legends of the lost continents of Mu, or Lemuria, and Atlantis could have been based on these ruins.

The origin of the video is uncertain although it is likely that it was an item on a news programme of some form.
