Frank Joseph talks to Full Moon Radio about a number of his works including Atlantis in Wisconsin and talks about a lost Bronze Age culture found beneath the depths of Rock Lake—a culture the evidence suggests had a lively copper trade with the lost continent of Atlantis! An exciting insite into America’s pre-Columbian heritage.

An action packed race against time to discover the legendary lost city of Atlantis in this debut novel by Andy McDermott.

The Hunt for Atlantis is the debut novel from British author Andy McDermott that follows the recent trend of a number of adventure / thriller stories written where Atlantis features as the central theme to the story. In this case archaeologist Nina Wilde and ex-SAS bodyguard Eddie Chase find themselves in a race against time to discover the legendary lost city. A race that unearths a deadly secret that could destroy civilisation forever!

In his own words McDermott describes his novels as “Indiana Jones meets James Bond” and I think he’s pretty much on the mark! The Hunt for Atlantis is an all out adventure story and there is certainly a cinematic quality to it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the story didn’t initially see the light of day as a potential movie script before being written as a novel.

So what is it about? Well without giving too much away the clue is in the title: The Hunt for Atlantis. The premise surrounds a university professor, Nina Wilde, who believes she has identified the location of the legendary city of Atlantis in the Gulf of Cadiz. Unfortunately for Nina the unsavoury Giovanni Qobras, the leader of the secret brotherhood of Selasphorus has no desire to see her succeed. Meanwhile support comes in the form of billionaire Kristian Frost and his daughter Kari who want to locate Atlantis for their own means.

The James Bond / Indian Jones character comes in the form of ex SAS bodyguard Eddie Chase who has been assigned by the Frosts’ to protect Nina. As the story progresses the couple find themselves in a race against time, back and forth across the globe, to discover the secret of Atlantis.

In many ways Atlantis can be a difficult subject for an author to approach. Apart from the obvious that its existence has yet to be proven there is only Plato’s writings for a description of the city. After that there are then a multitude of theories and speculation to choose from as to its location and demise.

Andy McDermott has kept his references to Atlantis and the additional lost cities that Nina and Chase discover within the boundaries of Plato’s work. He has added some nice touches with inscriptions in Glozel text and a variation of the base eight counting system that give some authentication to the story.

The Hunt for Atlantis is a work of fiction in the form of an adventure story and should be treated as such. McDermott does not overburden the reader with lengthy descriptions of the mechanical workings of a submersible or other technology that has been present in other novels on the subject. In addition the characters, in particular Chase and Nina, are well rounded, fun and likeable. Incidentally, there is one scene with a helicopter in which you really do have to feel sorry for the character involved unfortunately I can’t tell you any more or it will spoil the fun.

Although the novel is McDermott’s debut novel it does not suffer for it and it seems his British publisher’s, Headline, are fully behind him as a follow up: The Tomb of Hercules is available in Hardback and a further two novels are in the pipeline.

Whether you are planning on taking your annual vacation shortly or simply want to put your feet up and enjoy a bit of escapism with a rollercoaster, fun packed adventure then I would highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of The Hunt For Atlantis by Andy McDermott
